Time zone refers to a place on earth that uses a single standard time to regulate legal, social and commercial activities. Time zones are determined by country borders. The largest difference between the time zones of the two countries is 26 hours between the islands of Howland and Line.

Time Zones

World clocks are governed by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which does not include daylight saving time. In other countries, especially in English-speaking countries, the phrase Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is used to mean the same value as UTC. The first Coordinated Universal Time was officially adopted in 1963, while the official abbreviations of the aforementioned times were adopted later in 1967. Hence the time zones in the world are derived from UTC. An area on the ground can be in front of (+) or behind (-) UTC, which means UTC is 0 hours. Given that there are 24 hours a day, it is logical to argue that the largest time difference between two points on earth will be 24 hours. The reason for this time difference is that one end will have a time of +12 hours UTC,

The biggest time difference on Earth

Some places on earth do not use international time zones, that is, they do not use the UTC +12 and -12 hours UTC system. Some areas of the Earth use time zones that exist but are not defined in this time agreement. In some areas of the Earth, the time zone is +13 hours UTC or even +14 hours UTC. Basically, this means that areas between -12 UTC and +14 UTC will have a difference of as much as 26 hours, which is more than the theoretical 24 hours. Areas from +13 hours UTC will have a difference of 25 hours from areas from -12 hours UTC.

With this information, the biggest time difference between two places on earth is as much as 26 hours. The Howland Islands, an unincorporated unorganized territory of the United States, use the UTC time zone in the far west of the Earth. The linear islands of the Republic of Kiribati with a time zone of +14 hours UTC are located in the far east of the Earth. Thus, these two places have the largest time difference - 26 hours.

Proximity

Interestingly, despite such a huge time difference, these areas are very close to each other in the Pacific Ocean. This difference means that two areas that are close to each other have very little time difference. For example, the Howland Islands have a time zone of -12 UTC, while the Line Islands use the aforementioned +14 hours UTC. These time zones mean Wednesday 10:15 p.m. on the first is Friday 00:15 on the second, which is only two hours apart. The big difference in time of 26 hours is observed only in the dates of the two places. An area with a positive time zone means it is ahead in terms of the date.
