The fastest way to program a Zenith universal remote control to control a specific audio or video device is to program the control by directly entering the three-digit Zenith code assigned to the brand of the device. These codes are published in the user manual that comes with the Zenith remote control. If you don't know the remote control code assigned to your device brand, you can program it manually, using the "code lookup" method.

Zenith universal remotes with "Code Search" button

Manually turn on the device you want to program to control with the Zenith remote. For example, if you want to program the Zenith universal remote to control a television, press the "Power" button on the tv to turn it on.

Press and hold the "Code Search" button, located at the top left of the Zenith control, and release it when the indicator light (the small LED light in the upper left corner of the control) turns on.

Press the correct mode key for the audio or video device you want to program. The mode keys are the row of buttons at the top of the control, labeled "TV," "VCR," "CBL" (short for cable), and "AUX." Press the "AUX" mode key if you want to program the universal remote to control a DVD player, audio receiver, or any other device that does not fall within the other categories of mode keys. The indicator light should blink and stay on after the mode button has been pressed.

Point the remote at the device you are programming. Slowly and continuously press the "Power" button on the controller until the device turns off; each time you press the "Power" button, the controller uses a different code from its code library to turn it off. Once the device is turned off, the remote is temporarily programmed with the correct code to control it.

Press "Mute" on the Zenith control to save the current code.

Zenith universal remotes without the "Code Lookup" button

Manually turn on the device you want to program with the Zenith remote.

Press and hold the correct mode button for the audio or video device you want to program with the controller. The mode keys are the row of buttons at the top of the control, labeled "TV," "VCR," "CBL" (short for cable), and "AUX." Release the button when the indicator light, the small LED in the upper corner of the control, turns on.

Press the "Power" button on the Zenith remote.

Point the controller at the device you are programming. Slowly and continuously, press the "Channel Up / Down" button on the control to cycle through the codes stored in the code search library. Each time you press the button, the controller uses a different code from its library to turn off the device. Once the device has been turned off, the control will be temporarily programmed with the correct code to control it.

Press the "Mute" button on the remote to save the current code.
